I need to access the data on a laptop with a corrupt HDD. It will load pass the BIOS then get to the Win2K start up screen and sit there. I can load into DOS with a boot disk but the C drive is an "invalid drive specification". Try to reinstall over top of current OS, no good.

If you cannot access the drive using a boot disk or Partition Magic boot disk then you are not going to be able to retrieve your data, unless you send the drive off for data recovery. I have had to use MicroCom before for this and they are the most reasonable as far as price goes and they were able to retrieve all of my media.

I know this sounds weird, but i've had it work for me a couple of times....put the hard drive in the freezer for a couple hours, i generally wrap mine in a paper towel before putting it in. put it back in the system and try again. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't..can't explain why it does, but i read the hint somewhere and it worked. This is generally a one time thing...

Weird I know, but have had success....

LadyH,

It is the first time I heard that a hdd could recovered
thru a hibination. But my experience was that I have
to give it a swing (or a couple of swings) at start up
before the spindle can free itself and go, pretty much
like the starting of a car of the 20's and with full height
5.25 (I bet most of you guys have never seen one
of these muscles before) you can imagine how often
I strain my wrist

did you try fdisk /mbr? Ed Fair
