access_log contents?

I am not sure what is wrong with my log settings, but my access_log file is not recording anything, instead it just fills up with thousands of lines that say "combined".

#Log Parameters
CustomLog logs/access_log combined

I figured out my problem

in the LogFormat i had declared the nickname as "common"
