When I opened an access file I was prompted for a user name and password. I had previously tried to set some passwords on one access file and assumed that I made a mistake. I subsequently found that all access files, my backup as well as other files needed a password !?

I tried setting up a blank database and after asking me for a location, access requested a user name and password ?!

I have tried a variety of combinations of username and passwords to no avail - including my user name and pass to log on to win xp home.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling office -

So I turn to the pros....
thanks a load.

Update: I got admin with a password to work... not sure how it was set, but I got into the databases.
Once I entered it once, I was no longer asked for it and was able to open any access database!

I presume the next time I want to use access I will be asked for the password. How do I get rid of this user name and password so I can use access once again without being asked for a user name password

and if you can figure out what kind of password this is, I would be most apprecative. thanks

If you use Access security then you are setting up username and password for Access - not a specific database.
This is not a trivial topic and you should read plenty about it before getting involved.
You can use Help or you can look at the Access Security Faq at support.microsft.com.

But the issue you are experiencing is that if you set a password for Admin then you will get the login prompt every time you start Access. This is not normally desirable and you need to read about workgroup files in the security info to see what to do.
