I have an HP P1006 LaserJet printer hooked up to an XP Home SP3 computer via USB that works just fine when printing directly to the printer or from other XP machines on the LAN. The Access Denied comes when I try to hook up via my network to it with a computer running Vista Business. When I try to install it using the New Printer Wizard, it finds it on the LAN but when I hit next, I get the "Cannot Connect, Access Denied" window and that's the end of it. I have tried unsharing and then resharing the printer. I have temporarily disabled the firewalls on both computers, all with no success.

I've looked at HP's website and haven't found a solution to my problem. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks,

Jim W

Hi,
Can you share other files between the Vista and Xp machines?
(silly question) but have you installed vista drivers (if any) for that printer?
Another couple of things to try
open my computer in vista in the address type \\(the xp pc Ip address)ie. \\192.168.0.1 then hit enter, this will bring up the shares to that machine, (it may ask for the admin log in and password for the xp pc) find the printer then double click on that printer to connect to it.

another option is
Go to Control Panel. Choose printer. Then choose Add Printer.
Choose Add a local printer. Click on Create a new port. The default in the
drop down box is Local Port. Do not change that. Click Next.

A dialogue box will appear asking for you to enter a port name. Type in the
\\computer name\printer name ie. My computer's name is basement and the
printer name is EpsonSty so I typed in \\basement\epsonsty

hope that works for you

Regards
Max

Max,

Thanks for the reply. In answer to some of your questions.
1. Yes, I can share files between the two computers.
2. No, I haven't installed the vista drivers since normally Windows asks you to after you connect to the printer. I will try installing the drivers first and see if that makes a difference.
3. I can see the printer in various windows in Network Places or linking directly to the printer from the Vista machine. It just won't let me connect. I can even get the print status window but can't get beyond this point.
I will try your suggestions and see if I can make one of them work.

See if you get any clues, that might be relevant, from a thread like this.
