Access Database Automatically Has Password??

I have a database that had no password protection on it. All of a sudden, every morning, there is a Microsoft password applied to it. Every time we try to open the database, it prompts us for a password (not a form with code, but the security password access has built in). I don't set this up and I have no idea what the password could be. How can this be happening?? I have to copy over it everyday with another version of the db.

Rose,

Are you saying that you make a copy of the database, open it up without being prompted for a password, close it, open it again, and get prompted for a password? That would be very odd indeed.

Are you clicking on the database directly or using a shortcut? If it's a shortcut, make sure the target is what you think it is.

No - every morning, even when you manually open the database, the password protection has been setup. I use a copy from the day before (with no password) and overwrite the offending copy. We use a software package to back up the databases every night...maybe this is causing it? {Altho, it never did this before and we've been archiving this particular db for over a year.} Let me also say that there is a person here who I highly suspect is messing around in my programs...could this have been set by someone, even if that someone was not me? Is there a way to force access to set a password randomly? I know that sounds paranoid, but...
Thanks!

When you open a database, Access, by default, uses the System.mdw file. This file contains your security setups (names, groups, passwords, privileges) etc. If you have not specified a specific workgroup file to use, then you are using the System.mdw file. So, I can't see how simply "overwriting the offending copy" can fix it. I would think you would have to overwrite the System.mdw with a backup copy of it. Note that because user Admin (default user) has been assigned a password, that's why you are being forced to login.

This doesn't answer you question (because the scenerio you presented doesn't seem possible), but it might give you some ideas as to where to look, etc in determining the solution.

Rose,

If you "strongly suspect" that this person is messing with your database, I strongly recommend that you report your suspicion to the CEO of your organization and learn _a lot_ about access's built-in user-level security, and implement said security IMMEDIATELY. This is not an Access issue, it is a personnel issue, and you should address it as such.

I would put Spy ware on the computer to observe the individuals. But "ok" it with your boss and make sure the employees know, because of privacy issues. But I think setting up user-level security is the best solution too.
