Hi, I'm a long time Microsoft Access user/developer, but new to Access 2003 and setting up databases over a network.
I've created a database in a network folder. When I go to computers connected to this network, I'm able to open the database on each computer, but not have it open on multiple computers at once. When I try to open it on more than one computer I get the error "file already in use." All the computer are running Windows XP as well.

Any ideas how I can open the same database on multiple computers at once?

Thanks

Make sure Access default open is set to shared access. Tools -> Options -> Advanced

Review links on previous threads...

Hint: You should split your data (tables) from the the application (forms and reports) to prevent multiuser problems down the road. The back end is located on the server, and the front end can be copied to the local desktop.

Thanks for the reply. I was planning on putting the backend on the server and front end on the local machines as you suggested. Where do I set the Access default open? I would guess only on the backend database since it includes the tables that will be shared.

Thanks much.

Make sure Access default open is set to shared access. Tools -> Options -> Advanced

On the menu when you have the database open. Use "shared".

However, anytime you need to work on the schema, you need to open it up in exclusivly.
