I have got an Access 2002 db and made one change earlier with A2003 and now when A2002 users try to open, db opens initial db manager, waits for a few seconds and then up comes error message along the lines of:

Access has encountered an error and has to close, do you want to create backup and try repairing?

This does not help!

Here is the details of the crash:

AppName: msaccess.exe; AppVer: 10.0.4302.0; ModName: msjtes40.dll; ModVer:4.0.5914.0; Offset: 00126f3

If anyone can help, you will be saving restoring to last week's backup!

Oh this one is a pet peeve of mine against Microsoft. I recall going from Office 97 to Office 2000 made life ugly and I assume it's the same with 2K2 to 2K3.

I my case it had to do with the fact that 2K didn't use the same db engine anymore, or at least that is what MS said. What I found was just some tweaks to the DAO stuff and I was in business again.

With the backup I'd just roll it back and modify it on the 2k2 machine.

I have seen a similar problem with a database in Access 2000 file format, shared between Access 2000 and 2003 users. My problem was due to Access 2003 updating library references 'silently' i.e. without notifying me, when I ran a process such as 'compact and repair database'.

The work around was:

-- open the database in Access 2000
-- make sure no other users have the database open
-- Open the VBA window
-- Use Tools ... References to display references to function libraries.
-- look for any references prefixed with the word MISSING
-- uncheck these references
-- replace with an earlier version of the reference which was listed.

Then ...

Make sure that users with Access 2003 cannot open the database for exclusive access. This stops them running compact and repair, or making any other changes which allow Access to update the library references again.

Also, keep one machine with the older version of Windows and Access (2000 in my case) in which the Database Administrator can do development, maintenance etc.

Maybe you have a similar problem between Access 2002 and 2003 machines. I hope this will be of some help.

Thankyou bob, perfect Tek-Tip!

Once again, it was the Word & Outlook Object Libraries getting upgraded to 11 when ran on 2003 and not going back down to 10 when ran on XP.

In previous upgrades (2k to XP) you would at least get a compiler error to make you aware of the problem, rather than crashing at startup.

Many thanks
