Doing F4 actually rotates references like this:
initial ref A2
press once becomes $A$2 ( absolute column and row )
press again ... A$2 ( relative column/absolute row )
press again ... $A2 ( absolute column/relative row )
press again ... A2
and so on.

Did you hear about the literalist show-jumper? He broke his nose jumping against the clock.
