Hello everybody!

I'm new here and I'm trying to understand the layout of the forum here. It's not easy!
I hope you will take your time and read the thread.

I hope I'm in the right place.

I'm new to server as well.
I've recently installed Win 2000 adv server on my PC and I think I'm getting every hacker on the nett!:(

Just after the installation of the network card I got some "worms" in my Windows' systems folder, but I found that just after I installed the antivirus(Symantec AV Corp).
How did they go through so fast! It's just amazing!

I've been thinking about protecting the server, or to be precisely the PC with adv server 2000 in it.

I've also tried to install so called Symantec Enterprise Firewall, but it requered 2 netword adapters in the computer. I don't have that.

???
Is there any other firewall you can recommend me to use on my windows 2000 adv server?

???
And are there any special steps I can follow to prevent hackers of planting worms on my system?

PC:
Pen 3 600
256 mem
Ez PCI card 10/100

Thank you very much everybody for you time!

you can setup NAT/firewall on windows 2000 server with two NICs. If you don't have two NICs, another option is enable IP filtering. The best way to protect your system is adding a hardware firewall/router.

Thanks for your time.

I don't have any chance to install hardware firewall/router.

I'll try to enable IP-Filtering then.

Are there any good software solutions that I can use for this purpose?

Which antivirus would you recommend to use with server systems?

Thanks in advance.

If this is just a test station or one your learning on you can probabaly get away with just using symantec's firewall and virus scan software (non-enterprise version, i.e. what you buy at wal-mart or best buy).

You really are better off with a hardware firewall though. You can probably pick on up off e-bay for a good price if your willing to wait a week or so. As for brands I've only used Watchguard. It's got a few annoying quirks in the model I use but its easy to use and comes with some nice software.

Thanks guys.

I've got original version of windows 2k adv server so I can't use non-Enterprise solutions from Symantec.

Thanks anyway.

I think I'll just install another NIC on my PC.

Have a nice "Serving"!
