This is a long story.
1. I "had" a winnt pii system on an abit ab-bx6 motherboard,
which maxs out at 512 ram with for slots filled. It "had" only
two slots filled at 256mb. I wanted to fill up the ram slots to max.
So I bought two new 128mb simms. As soon as I inserted them,
then booted up, I got winnt's blue screen of death.
2. I took out the two new simms. Booted up fine.
3. I swapped the old simms with the new simms. Booted up fine.
This verified the new simms were fine (non damaged)
I backed up all needed data off the machine to a CD.
4. Filled the memory banks to capacity with old simms. Boots to bluescreen.
5. I took out all simms and put the initial simms back in with
the original configuration of 2 simms at 128mb totalling 256.
It boots fine.
And then I upgraded to win2K professional with no service pack info
probably none. It boots fine with win2k. In the process of upgrading,
I formatted the HD. There are 2 partitions. I installed once one
D drive, formatted the C partition, then I reinstalled on the C drive
and formatted the D partition. I did this for non-relevant reasons,
but I doubt a virus survived it.
6. After I installed win2k it booted fine.
7. I added the new simms back in to max at 512. I get the blue screen in win2k.
8. I take the new simms out (back to 256mb with the original
2 simms of 128), and it boots fine.
9. Exhausted, tired, and frustrated, I give up. Shut down the
computer. Go back to the store and return the new ram simms.
10. I go home and boot up, expecting to boot up into win2k
successfully with the original ram configuration. Now it reboots
continuously. As soon as it finishes booting up, it will reboot - nonstop.
Need help.
Now I don't have a computer at all. It is a large paperweight.
I am looking for any suggestion at all, like fixing it or salvaging
something useful out of it.
