it seems like i can't install anything. when i try and install things, the program seems to be running fine, but when it atempts to lanch installShield, i get:

Setup failed to lanch instalation engine:
Error loading type library/DLL

i know this isn't a windows 9x problem directly, but installShield comes with win98, and is one of those esential pices of software. plus, i could find no better forum for this question...

any help would be greatly apreciated.

Snarly issue that crops up once in awhile.

It may be cured with something as simple as deleting temp files.
Sometimes it's cured by restoring stdole.32.tlb from the CD: (copied from elsewhere)
for Windows 98, to do that, from the Windows Start menu, choose Run.
Type sfc in the Open: field of the Run window and click OK.
In the System File Checker window, select Extract one file from Installation disk.
In the Specify the system file you would like to restore box, type stdole32.tlb, and then click Start.

In the Extract File window, if the Restore from field is blank, browse to the Win9x folder on your Windows 98 installation CD-ROM.
If the Save file in field is blank, browse to the Windows System folder on your hard disk.
Click OK, click OK again, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart your computer

IF that doesn't work, here's a further link to follow with more things to try:

If it's an installshield problem, this should cure it:

1) Make sure you can see hidden and system files (in Windows Explorer, go to View->Folder Options and then the View tab)
2) Browse to C:\Program Files
3) Delete the Installshield Installation Information folder
4) Browse to C:\Program Files\Common Files
5) Delete the Installshield folder there as well
6) As gargouille already mentioned, also clear out your temp files
7) Empty your recycle bin and reboot

Don't worry about deleting those two folders. They will be re-created the next time you run a setup.exe. You should hopefully have no problems now...

i tried cdogg's solution, but after deleting those files i still got the error.

i'd love to attempt gargouille's, but i don't have a wondows 98 cd. my computer (compaq) simply came with win98 installed. it came with a recovery cd, that will let me go back to factory. but there are only two files on that cd, and not folders...

thanks for your help though, and if you have any other posible solutions, i'd love to hear them.

Well, that at least tells you that it's not likely an Installshield problem. Sounds like a DLL or installation file is corrupt, or cannot be accessed for some reason. If you are installing from CD, try copying the entire CD to the hard drive first. Or, you could download a small program like Winamp or Winzip and try to run that install.

If it still fails, then it's not a hardware problem and probably some kind of corrupt Windows system file. Have you tried searching on Microsoft's website?

Lots of the Windoze key dll's are downloadable from the Web...probably evolved from others being in your situation.
So, do a search for the file I listed and try to find it...
Needless to say OEM's only image the OS and call it good, not properly empowering the customer with the TRUE software they've purchased. An ever-increasing practice.
Sometimes, depending on the vendor, you can "squeaky wheel" them into giving you the OS on disc...maybe that's an option for you. Of course, Win98 has fallen into the "no longer supported" category at MS...even tho I think you can still avail yourself of what's at MS site.
Come to think of it you may be able to dl .dll's there.

thanks for the help guys. but due to some other problems with this computer, and the fact that it's a pice of trash, i'm going to have to reformat my hard drive and reinstall win98. oh well.

thanks though
