Can SQL 6.5 and version 7 live on the same server with no problem? I am looking at trying to update some of the current databases and have limited resources here.
If I attempt to try, any guesses as to what may happen?
My memory ,admittedly getting dim, is that they cannot. Also why are you going to 7 when 2000 has been out for quite a while. I think you may be able to have 6.5 and 2000 running on the same machine.
I am ultimately going to 2000. My concern was skipping a version and trying to eliminate as many problems in doing this upgrade as possible. Also with 2000, I believe you need to be running Windows 2000(??) and 6.5 cannot run in that environment.
As I said, I am somewhat of a novice and this has been placed in my lap recently....so I am trying to plan for what I need.
1- You cannot run SQL 6.5 and 7 on the same machine. They can both be installled and you can switch betweeen the versions but only one runs at a time. The same is true with SQL 6.5 and SQL 2000. SQL 7 and SQL 2000 can run at the same time.
2- The upgrade from 6.5 to 2000 is probably as easy as the upgrade from 6.5 to 7.
3- SQL 2000 runs on Win NT 4 as well as Win 2000.
4- I recommend SQL 2000. You can download and try it for free. There are also incentives for upgrading now rather than waiting. Terry L. Broadbent FAQ183-874 contains tips for posting questions in these forums.

Thank you so much for your reply. My real concern about skipping a version is because of the amount of code sitting with these databases and trying to eliminate as many problems as possible. Or at least just taking a few at a time.
