I am running Windows 2000 on an IBM Laptop for some time and everything was fine. I now seem to have a problem which I haven't seen before. After a couple of minutes of use the mouse button acts oddly. Instead of a simple left click, it selects from my Desktop a rectangular array of buttons so if I click the second icon over and second row down on the desktop it highlights a square from the top left (4 icons) and opens them all? The IBM has a pointing device build-in and I use an external Logitech mouse, both mouses have the same behavior after a time so I guess its a system thing. I opened Systems mouse folder and everything is set correctly. This one has me scratching my head...any and all comments welcome. Thank you.[ponder]

Stuck Shift key perhaps?

PS forum616 or forum602 might come up with better answers.

Are there any Mouse and Pointing Devices, mentioned in the Device Manager, that can be uninstalled, and after a Reboot, rediscovered by Windows?

Can you test this behavior from Safe Mode, and from Normal Mode, but with a different user?

In Folder Options/ General what happens if you play around with the Settings under "Click items as follows"?

You can always try another Mouse.

It sounds rather like the CTRL key is stuck.

I have a somewhat similar problem with a Dell Inspiron, which has the little mouse stick embedded in the keyboard. I had to disable it in the bios because after 10 mins or so the mouse will slowly wander off-screen. External mouns works OK with the touchpad and mouse stick disabled.

I blew some canned air under the keys and so far so good. I never would have thought to clean out around the keys. Lets hope this does the trick. Thanks for all the suggestions, you really helped.
