A client uses InDesign2 ...

...and I'm creating files in CS2. It seems that the pdf's I send to client (who runs a local newspaper and should know better to upgrade, yes I know) cause horrible problems occasionally. Is this predictable? Is it redeemable?

Any suggestions please? Even the bleeding obvious (tell them to catch up) appreciated.

...never used indesign 2, with the pdf files you send them do they then position these pdf's in indesign 2?

...are these problems specific to a certain pdf format (i.e. 1.4 PDF, 1.5 PDF, 1.6 PDF...

...it is difficult to pinpoint the problem, it could be their rip not processing the version of pdf you supply correctly or if they are placed in indesign 2 it could be indesign 2 playing up when they print or export from it...

...what settings do you use to export the pdfs from CS2?

Yes, they Place pdf in InDesign document.

Normally i set pdf to 1.4 and that's the only one they've had. Today I sent a 1.3 just as experiment, haven't heard back yet.

Symptoms are that pdf is totally missing when exported and that PC slows to a halt when my pdfs are added. They're no great filesize either (like 2.5mb).

Look, they really should upgrade, but I just need to confirm it's not something I'm doing. My pdf's go to plenty other client's with no problems.

...does sound concerning, it certainly sounds to me to be their end in part, missing pdf on output is not one I have come across before...

...if sending them a 1.4 pdf that contains transparency then when they come to print from indesign to postscript they will need to flatten the transparency, if they export to 1.4 or higher then the rip they use will need to support flattening...

...i suspect they flatten when printing from indesign, so your best bet is to send them a pre-flattened 1.3 pdf as you have done this time around, see if this helps the problems you are experiencing...

...the best you can do is ensure that you embed all fonts, have the transparency blend space in CS2 as CMYK not RGB, export to 1.3 pdf, choose high flattening settings...

...if i ever get troublesome pdf files i have often resorted to exporting to eps from acrobat, using pitstop to convert all text to outlines and then place this in my required document. This is of course only if i have trouble contacting the client and whether i have the time to trouble shoot...

...if they are not aware, there are updates to indesign 2 which, if not already done so, be worth investigating here:

Whoa... I've never come across a website that has a 10/10 Google ranking! Thanks again, Andrew, I'll point them towards the updates and I'll take on board what you say about exporting to eps
