Looks like I have 3 update options:
Release 3.1
Release 3.1.1
Release 3.1 Service Pack 1 (I assume this is the latest rev)

Existing firmware load is 3.0020 (H.323) Couple thousand phones in the environement. We are not using the USB port, we are using backup but not backing up the call log.

Any real world advice? Which is more stable?

I'm at 5.2.1(R015x.02.1.016.4) sp2 going to sp6 on s8730's. PE is now in play as well.

Thanks,

phoneguy55,

Thanks. Is that because of issues with the newer loads?

3.l SP1 (shows up as R3.101S on "list registered"), seems to be stable, and it does work properly with the built in VPN client as well.

Thanks Mitch672. Good to hear and thanks for your help. Is there an issue (3.1sp1) with the phone keeping their old IP address on a reboot if DHCP can not be reached? This function is key in my environment as most remote locations do not have a DHCP server. I seem to remember reading something about this issue..

Thanks,

If you do a full reboot on any of the newer IP phones, one of the first things they do is request their IP address, via DHCP. If you don't have a reachable DHCP server, you should probably not be deploying IP phones to remote locations. Are you aware that most of the newer G-Series gateways (G250, G350 G430 and G450) support a DHCP server on them? We generally use that, if the client has no local DHCP server, and we are on our own "VLAN". Works well, and then we use the local S8300 LSP blade to host the files, so everything is administered locally, even if they connect to a central site. This keeps things working smoothly in the event of a WAN outage.

I was aware of the DHCP function of the G-series.... But I don't really want to do that as we already have a DHCP environement. Why duplicate it... Placing a DHCP server in every remote site is not really a good option.

What about the downloaded setting:

SET DHCPSTD 0
"DHCPSTD controls whether the phone continues to use an expired IP address if the phone received no response to its address renewal request 0 for yes, 1 for no"

I assume this is not in a reboot situation... I can't remember if I failover to the LSP do the phones reboot?

You would not "duplicate" it, but replace it.

By having it local, its going to work as long as power is applied to the G-series gateway. If you have a separate VLAN (for voice only), this works well, as the PCs can still work off whatever you are using now, and just have the IP phones use the DHCP server on the gateway.

It depends on the firmware release, but I would assume eventually the IP phones will reboot, and be looking for an IP address. It really depends on what caused the outage, if it was power related, guess what... those IP phones are going to be looking for a DHCP server.

You can try the parameter and see how it goes for you. Of use static IP's, if you are really worried about it.

Thanks Mitch. In truth it hasn't really been an issue. All remote sites have dual WAN redundancy and UPS's. But it will cause an issue eventually.

Thanks again,
