I have a client using the 9611gs for years with no complaints and they love the Avaya no system issues, very reliable but they asked about changing to a new style. I showed them the J179 and their reply to me was " it looks cheap" they mentioned it also looked like one of the Ring Central phones.

What are your opinions about these or your customers feedback, style, performance, issues, etc.?

Thanks

Hi,

Personally, we had the 9608 when we had the IP Office, we changed over to Server Edition and moved to J169's (B/W instead of Colour) and have been using them for over 5 years now. Out of the 150 we rolled out, only 2 have ever failed, the main issue is the Phone cable (curly cable), but I think thats the same with all phones...
But we are a 14 office Estate Agents and the phones are in use most of the day. I think the phones are a great device and never had any issues with them, including pass though on network for 1gb.

To me they looks like they designed it after the ( AWARD WINNING )

Nortel IP Phone 1140e

These were rebranded to AVAYA. They had a nice weight to them and were heavy enough that they stayed where they were placed on the desk and did not move back over time.

I like the J phones. Especially the Webinterface for troubleshooting.

The main disadvantage is the long time to boot and the fact that even after a reboot the phone doesn't update its cinch with all changes made in 46xxsettings.txt. This is only done when the phone is reset.

Never had any complaints about the J's look. Had a few clients lately wanting to update their 96xx handsets due to "looking old"... They like the colour screens, pretty screen savers etc.

Reliability's been good thus far, only had a couple fail.

Having said that, we recently upgraded a client's IP500v2 from R6 to R12 - they're still running the 54xx handsets very happily!! Those things were bulletproof lol.

I’m just not a fan of the 9611 look. The phones are quite different. We’ve been using J series for years and haven’t replaced any yet due to being faulty (under 1k). J189s with JEM24s are nice along with the 179, 169, 159 & 139. Never use a J129 and think it is like the others-it is a SIP phone. 179 is our go to since the 9508/9608 was a hit in design and it does look similar to the Nortel 1100s- nice observation. Wireless modules are a good option for them. Custom backgrounds and options from the 46xxsettings.txt file as mentioned. Jenne may also have skins for them to spice it up. I do wish they had a quicker boot as it looks like they will never get DHCP but they do. I haven’t tried the Vantage phone but it looks fun and I welcome feedback on those.

IPOriface I have always thought the 54xx series was a very classy look and very dependable. The stands allowed users the ability to tilt the sets more to their liking rather than the 2 tils selections on all the newer sets.

I have seen 95xx users tilting their sets in all sorts of ways like putting books behind it pushing the stand up against the wall then down. The 54xx series always stayed in the same place on the desk and never migrated back as a result of users pushing on the buttons. All the newer ones are light and tend to move back over time on the clients desk unless they have something behind it like a cubicle or wall to stop it.

The displays on the DS handsets especially the 5410 were very hard to see. I had thought that if Avaya had released the DS series with a back light all the DS handsets would have been easier to read. The 95xx series has a back light so that must mean that the power for the back light was always there maybe originally for the Partner sets that did require extra power for its back light.

I've see some pretty ugly sets in the past but Nortel/Avaya has done a pretty good job of design over the years.
