9608 Phones have very low volume on handset with incoming calls but not outgoing 1

IPO 8.1 embedded VM
They have 3 9608 phones in a different office connected to the IPO via a router to router VPN connection. Were getting very low volume on the handset but the speakerphone works apperars to work more often.
All outgoing calls seem to be fine. The codec is G.711 ulaw.

 
The volume button on the phone can be used to raise and lower the volume.
So when you are on a call on the handset, set the volume up.
This will not affect the volume on the speaker (same button, different volume setting)

The volume button has no effect on this issue.
 
Try to adjust the gain settings on the IPO for that extension.

it turned out to be a bad 9608...it failed sporadically. If you made 10 calls 50% the handset would not work
 
Your post suggested the fault was across 3 handsets :-)

 
I believe the other problems turned to be 4- Polycom IP Phone on the same network going to a hosted company. We discovered this today. They must be sharing some RTP ports causing one way audio sometimes. All problems are only on incoming calls.
 
Then there should be vlans programmed on the switch.

make sure that the phones are on the correct firmware, they should be on this Kernel S96x1_UKR_V13r47_V13r47
and this application firmware S9608_11HALBR6_2_1_19U_V452
older versions had problems with handset volumes I think but that could also have been the 9508.
