827 runs very slow

Since rebuilding the config on my 827 there are speed problems: DNS works but very slowly; pinging from the outside shows about 50% loss; telnet from outside works but soooo slow-the screen just sits there for 10-20 seconds before it shows the Cisco response. Browsing on the inside, again, works, but is so slow.

Simple ADSL setup with IRB, etc. No debugging on. No other PC apps going outside.

Memory problems?

Thanks,

Might be router is getting overloaded. Do a show process CPU and a show process CPU history. If CPU is continually over 80% utilization then need to back off some of the services. In the show process CPU you will be able to see the process that is using up the CPU the most.

I would take a look at your nic card settings and see how it is setup , make sure it is set as auto. Check the router side and make sure it is auto also .

Thanks, Joamon and viperqq; the cpu is running at a few percent only. Viperqq: nic cards? The slow speed happens with multiple machines on the inside.

A clue: telnet from the inside to the router is normal (quick) but from the outside to the router, it is slow (drops packets I presume).

Are there OAM commands that troubleshoot the atm interface connections? I have had dsl connections that failed and it would be helpful to get statistics or error logs on the ATM connection.

Thanks,

Thanks, guys; the problem was the default routing; I deleted he routing table and its static routes and rebuilt it. Works now.

Apparently I had two static routes to the outside and they must have been competing. I had assumed that packets would simply find and use the best one.

There were subsidiary issues, too; such as, how to delete static routes to the outside? Answer: delete the entire table w/ "no ip routing". And also, the commands default-network and default-gateway did not seem to work as expected, though there is no doubt something I need to learn there, as well.

thanks again;
