What does the /8# mean in the title bar following the filename and the color mode?

All I have on mine (PS7) is the filename, zoom-percentage, and "(CMYK)" in brackets. I can't see any numbers...

8 bit (as opposed to 16 bit).

Yes, I know about 8 bit. But the pound symbol #? What does that mean? They only appear on some 8 bit files.
