We are going to do a clean install of 2k server and need to know how to get backup exec 8.6 to restore files from a tape that was backup before the server was wiped out.

1st. Was the backup done using the BE Agent for SQL Server?

2nd. If so, just rebuild SQL Server. Once it is built, use Veritas and select RESTORE. Select the files to be restored and restore them. If you are restoring the system databases (MASTER, MODEL, MSDB) you will need to overwrite the originals.

If you don't need the original logins and jobs, you don't need to restore the original system databases.

Make sure the new install is patched to the same level as when the backups were done.

Sorry I'm not sure if I explained well enough.
The server we are upgrading is the backup server. We are going to run a backup of user files before we wipe the server out.
I've done restores before and have to click on the date of the backup. When we wipe the server those dates "tapes" won't be listed. How do I do a restore off of a tape that isn't listed.

Thanks for your response.

Here is what I got back from backup Exec:

Insert tape
Inventory
Catalog
restore

or you can do a special BTBackup of the \catalogs folder and restore to
the \Catalogs folder of the new server, (stop all BEWS services on each
server first ) then delete the BETOPCAT.IDX file on the new server and
restart the services

You beat me to it (my last response was before I went home for the weeked and I don't always check the forums from home).

I'm sorry for misunderstanding you, I thought you were rebuilding the SQL Server.

Just remember that to insert the tape, use the IMPORT command in Backup Exec. Sometimes BE doesn't like tapes that are inserted by hand.
