Try on 2007 or 2010 when you can.

Got the same "too many cell formats" error message on my regular pc with Excel 2002. I copied the file to a laptop with Excel 2007 and had no issues. The matrix seems to be one of the first docs that won't open in my trusty old Microsoft Office version.

I opened it using OpenOffice Calc and then saved it. It then gave me an option to save as Microsoft Excel 97/200/XP, and it works using Excel now.
