This is where I discover I've been some kind of idjit.

My project was 720 x 480. Evidently, with square pixels (as everything that went into it came from a Photoshop document). I took those Photoshop PCT files and made lots of various Quicktimes (Sorenson 3 @ 100%), all of which look just dandy while playing in Quicktime on the computer. By "Dandy", I mean my circles are circular in Euclidean space.

When I export-print-to-tape, my NTSC output shows a black bar at the top and bottom of the image and the ratios look fine. My circles are circular.

But now, when I export to MPEG-slated-for-DVD, I notice that I basically have two options: 9x16 ratio, which makes my circles squat and fat, and 4:3 ratio, which makes my circles tall and skinny.

Are these my only two options?

I had a massive data loss last month and my only sources are those resultant Quicktime files. I'm using Premiere 6.5 and I have the Cinemacraft Encoder version 1.3b.

Is there anything I can do to make MPEG files that have circular circles?

Cheers,

Hi-
I am relatively new to what I am about to say but how about this:- Download the trial version of TMPGenc and re-encode the files to whatever you want. There are loads of settings in this software - including stuff like maintaining aspect ratios, setting exact output sizes etc. A really good site that has lots of info on this as well as other software is:-

I'm fairly sure that you will find the answers there -

Hi Kim,

Man, I'm glad you responded to this -- I forgot to update!

It turns out that there was a project setting that was wonky. Once I switched to 9:16 and output to 9:16, my circles remained circles and my movie's back to being wide screen. Yay!

Cheers,
