633 "modem in use or not configured properly"

Toshiba satellite laptop with dialup modem and Winxp. We get the 633 "modem in use or not configured properly" message. Searched these forums and the web and none of the advice seems to work. I cant seem to find any info on correcting the problem without restaging machine.

We disabled the builtin modem and installed a usb modem. The first time we used it, it worked. The next time we used it, we get the same 633 error message. Anyone have any recent experience in resolving the issue?

I personally do not have any experience with this. But hang in there. This forum has persons from many time zones. Someone will have a possible answer. We are seeing this post. Have patience.
