Has it always been this way? Slow speeds usually indicate problems with the telephone line. (I had problems once with a poor connection in my UPS!) Can you hear any "static" on the 'phone line? Can you (with a long cord), connect the modem to the main incoming line, with everything else disconnected? I have a customer who had a seperate (dedicated) line put in, and still gets 26 kbps. (I hooked my laptop directly into her incoming box.) I called SBC (her carrier), and was told that was all they can do in her area! "If she wants speed, switch to cable". It took over a year to get consistant speed on my dial-up, they finally found a loose connection 1/2 mile away in a junction box. Keep fighting, you'll find it eventually.

OK, thanks for the info... I only use Dialup when my Starband satellite if offline... check with others that use the same ISP they were impressed with my speed of 39/88 they average 35/64...
the line is about 1 ft from the connection. which is about 40 ft from the master plugin...mastr plug in has phone company splitter 1 phone there then line runs 40 ft to 2nd connection....for my phone & fax... i unplugged from the junction and went straight there nothing else was online. NO there is NO STATIC.. the line is very good.. I also have 2 more modems to test and see.. but both are internal... (want speed swithc to cable) we have no cable, SBC has been working for 4 yrs to bring in DSL, (shhh its 23 miles north at this time) they say maybe later this summer or early fall...THANKS for the info..

Recommended MTU for dialup is 576. If you set it too high, you will have higher packet fragmentation which will probably cause degraded performance.

Thanks I'll add that to the notes... last time i really used a modem was back in 1999... I lived 2blocks from the main FIO cable input for the master telephone switch for Cheyenne, Wy. since have moved and been using Starband Satellite, but summer times we have lots of RAIN thunderstorms and would like to keep the internet online so I can get the major threats via.. that.. by having the radar sites online.. Thanks for the info..

I feel for you, I'm with SureWest. I HAVE to use their dial-up, They have a "lock" on this area. In order to get cable (thiers), or DSL (theirs) I have to have full service (cable TV, cable internet, and long distance phone service). I have a good TV ant (20+ channels) and use my cellphone for unlimited long distance. To get their package, would cost around $90.00. No other cable company can come into their "sphere of influence". Monopoly laws are different for Telecoms.
