5610 Line Appearence not allowing pickup of held calls

I know, you should not use line appearence buttons.

I have this system with 3 lines that appear on all the phones. They put a call on hold, and when trying to pickup the held call they first PICKUP THE HANDSET (which grabs the next available line appearence) then they press the held call. They ARE connected although there is no talk-path between the previously held caller and the user. When pressed again (put back on hold) and pressed a third time (retrieved from hold again) the connection is made and the caller can now talk to the user.

It DOES work if the held call is originally pressed without picking up the handset first. Then lifting the handset.

Any ideas/help??

Don't use them.
Use park keys instead of line appearances.
