5.5 Servers Missing From list

Hi guys, hope you can help.
We've got a bit of a weird one going on here.
we've got a mix of 2000 and Exchange 5.5 mail servers for one of our customers.
Wehn we go through the Create New User wizard in AD, it gets to the
"create an exchange mailbox" screen, out exchange 5.5 servers don't appear in the serevr drop down list, only the 2k servers.
there may 1 or 2 2k servers that are missing but I don't think there are.

Any ideas?

sorry, one more note:

I can go through the new user wizard, create a user (without a mailbox), create a mailbox in exchange administrator, and link the 2.
This then replicates to 2k so the exchange tabs appear in AD.

But still can't create a mailbox as part of the wizard as the servers aren't listed
