5.5 KMS encryption

we have a lot of users that have received keys from our crashed 5.5 exchange/kms server. since then, i have installed an exch 2003 server and 2003 enterprise ca to hand out keys, but when the kms users send to the 2003 users, they cannot open email. i know the encryption types are different, but is there a way for the two to send to each other?
