Have you ever seen when a whole spreadsheet with formulae shows the formulae not the result? Is there a setting for that?

They keyboard shortcut for this is [Ctrl]+[`] (the key to the left of the 1 and above Tab).
This is likely how it got messed up in the first place - someone was trying to [Ctrl]+[ignore][Tab][/ignore] between sheets and accidentally pressed the key above tab instead.
