We had a 4506 with a Sup-II (not Sup-II+) WS-X4013 donated

I'm reading horror stories of the sup-ii

I also looked at various CCO docs and things that state that the Sup-II is only layer 2 and does not support layer-3 routing.

for example

Can anyone verify? Can a Sup-II actually do layer 3 or is it only a layer-2 device?

I read that site too...

The SupII is in there and it was sold to the company as is.

The SupII went end of sale May 2005 and this switch was purchased Feb 2005... so, at the time, they could still purchase the supII with the 4506

SupII's can only deliver layer 2 switching.

Will need to upgrade to a minimum SupII+ to get basic L3/4 routing or SupIII to get more enhanced L3/L4 capabilities.

I also thought the SupII+ was the minimum for a 4500. But the Sup II is discontinued now so maybe Cisco (rightfully so I suppose) don't update their 4500 literature to account for an obsolete supervisor module.

Sup II is layer2 only . It "is" supported in the 4500 chassis as long as the the code is at 7.4.1 or higher , we have them in our network . If you are looking for a stable code download 7.6.15 which is GD . Early on the Sup II did have component issues and had a pretty high failure rate on them , they have settled down in the last couple of years .It was mostly SRAM failures on the board , they even built in a continuely running sram test into the code to detect these problems .

Thanks KiskoKid and vipergg... you confirmed my thoughts.
