I have this hard drive that is being detected as a 4Gb hard drive even though there is a 80GB connected and detected...I tried to partition and re-format the 4Gb hard drive and it screwed up my C drive...anyways someone could help me that would be great...also it's being detected in Windows ME as a removable drive....thanks for the help!

What happens when you disconnect the 80GB drive temporarily and reformat the new drive? Have you checked the BIOS to make sure the number of cylinders matches the number printed on the HD?

To do that I must change the jumpers....but I'll try that.

Well, if the hard drives are on the same IDE cable, you should be able to get away with just unhooking one and not worrying about the jumpers. You could have a hard drive set to master, slave, or cable select and it would still be detected - just as long as it's the only one on that channel.

Not matter what I do I still can't get the 40GB to be detected as a 40GB

Install drive overlay .
Goto the manufaturer of the drive
an download their drive utilities .
Disconnect all drives from mb.
Connect the 40GB as master ,
boot with a bootable diskette .
Then use the drive utilities .

Drive overlay can innstall as a small partition of the drive or files making it visible as a large drive and loaded by bios.
Doing FDISK /MBR on disks with overlay sw is baaad,
as the overlay sw thats loaded when bios starts is wasted
on the disk in question .

Also don't forget to double-check all the hard drive settings in the BIOS, making sure every one is set to "autodetect" or something similar. I had a problem like this where the BIOS would only detect the first 500MB of a 120GB drive. It turned out that a setting was forcing it to only see the first 1,024 cylinders. It's possible a setting is set incorrectly just for that drive.

cdogg;
unless i completely misread smaxted posting(nothing about it being an older pc)
That setting was probably LBA(logical block address).....and "use Int13 extensions", and MultiSector Tranfers, ...the CHS needs not be set manually for these large drives, especially with newer BIOS's(circa '96-'98)...that pretty much stopped at the 8.4Gb mark.

Ofcourse if there was Drive Overlay used, to see that 80GB, then all bets are off..
i dunno, maybe everyone's just one step ahead of me here

Also i guess a BIOS update wouldn't help much either, as it might throw off the Disk Overlay Master Partition Table and the BIOS's Master Boot Code????
dunno,not puttin enough thought into this here

TT4U,
That's right. My point was not to have anything manually set for the hard drive. Everything should be left to autodetect.

If it is an older PC, then it would make sense that a Drive Overlay was being used for the 80GB drive.

Ahhhh!
Alrighty then;
thank you

If you post the exact drive make and model...i happen to have a reference if necessary that may help with the correct parameters....if necessary.
obviously, you may have already found this at the manu.'s site.
