Gents,

Been a while, been very busy. Seen some posts about the new 4.0.7. A month ago did a 4.0.5 install, 412 with a full boat. Was having problems with the voicemail system. Was able to get back there today and do a complete upgrade on the switch and vm pro to .7. VM Pro issue was resolved (different internal and external messaging was fixed) but something happened you might want to make note about. After the system booted back up from the upgrade, 10 54xx phones went down and were upgrading their firmware. When they came back up, the rest of the digital phones went down trying to get their firmware upload. I had to unplug modules and then phones, once we got down to 10 phones, the phone firmware upgrade started. Apparently the phone upgrade is automatic. Other than that, everything is else has gone well. As a company, this is our 3rd .7 system. So far so good. Didn't have many issues with .5 except the voicemail issue of not being able to record a different interal/external greeting. We do about 4 IP Office installs a week. So hopefully I will be able to keep you posted on 4.0.7 better.

Diz -- Have a good weekend.

Interesting you say this. Some of our Engineers bought this fault to me this week and I had put it down to the phone firm ware. Problem was no manager program/tftp program was open so the phones had froze on boot.
With the suggestion of leaving a manager program open or with the biggers sites a 3rd party tftp it seemed to resolve however was not confident until they had been in up time for a week or so.

Hmmm, very interesting developement we might have here. Will have some of the installers test while they install.

It is the same firmware for the phones as in 3.2.57. I had seen a suggestion (i forget from who) that if you have multiple DS30's, unplug them, upgrade the control unit, plug in the DS30 and upgrade that, which will force the phones to get the newer firmware. Do each DS30 seperately.

The IPO's tftp server is only capable of doing 10 simultaneous connections... IE 10 phones at a time.

sup dizzyphil,

this wouldn't happen to be for our friends over at the "copper kingdom" would it?

i read about this firmware thing in the release notes and it threw a major read flag up...however seeing how we are STILL required to put out 3.1.65...i don't guess i'll have to deal with this too soon.

I have found that if on a new install you plug in the phones itwill upgrade them on first go round. I you unplug the phone that has been upgraded and plug a new not upgraded phonr the phone will cme up without trying to upgrade.

The tip off that a phone was not upgraded is that the name and ext number on the screen will shifted to the right.

I too have noticed what ronromano said. I have a new IP500 system going (actually 7 of them) next week. I have 4 of them in our lab for setup and was pushing off the install until the new 4.0.07 was out. (need to be able to dial hunt groups over SCN without having the Advanced Network licsense) It does work now on 4.0.07. When I would take a 54xx digital phone and plug it in, it automatically updated. If I plugged in another phone to the same port afterwards, it wouldn't update. When I would take a 5410 or 5420 set that had been upgraded to firmware 5.0 and plug it into the system we use in our office (still at 4.0.5 and with Manager open on our VM PRO server) they would downgrade automatically.

Hope everyone has good luck with the 4.0.7 - One thing I noticed, and tested - USA we can have internal twinning :)

Not the 'copper crash' Gibsonic, as you know they have thier own problems!!!! Will be working on that soon though. I might have to talk to DD about "moving on up" past 3.1.65 LOL.....

Installs have been no problem on .5 or .7 because I lab them up in the house here before they go out and never noticed the auto upgrade because by the time I get them un-boxed and hooked up for testing they are already upgraded. I'm not fast enough to get more than 10 out of a box I guess.

Just FYI, if you hadn't noticed, the actual TFTP process itself is extremely fast. I would estimate less than 20 seconds of actual file transfer time and the remaining 4min is internal processing and upgrade. At that point the phone no longer requires Manager/TFTP (tested by unplugging the Ethernet from the 406 after the TFTP reported 100%). Upgrading the phones using the solo powering of the DS modules is quick and pretty painless.

why using manager for tftp
but why even use tftp if you can use http for file
transfering

http can handle much more then tftp
so if you have the possibility then use http

@dizzyphil - DD and others have including myself have questioned the version over and over. Even the field is asking for 3.2 and they were part of the concern for waiting. It's still in marketing's hands and even though we got a verbal ok from KH a few months ago, we still haven't got anything in writing yet so we are still on 3.1.65. KH is actually no longer over the avaya product line in marketing so we have to start all over with some new guy.

with 4.0.7 i noticed that Avaya Implementation Manager (AIM) for IP Office is now supported an according to the notes on the website it sounds pretty slick. Has anyone tried this yet? I am interesting in it's staging template functionality. I've had several large multi-site installs that I've been able to automate some-what using the import/export functions for shortcodes, trunks etc. but something a lil more robust and all-inclusive could be very useful for the next large multi-site install....bue aye...i forget...i'd have to actually be able to USE 4.0 first!!!!

I have been patently waiting for this maintenance release to upgrade to v4.

I have read threw most of the documentation that I can find and everything looks OK but I wanted to ask the experts (you guys) before I went ahead.

I’m currently running on 3.2.55 and will be going straight to 4.0.7. Is there any issues with this? Do I need to load 3.2.57 or 4.0.5 first?

I’m running a 406v2 with 100 – 4412’/4406’s and about 50 – 5610’s/ 5620’s/ 5621’s

Also do I need to upgrade VMP to 4.0.15 at the same time, or can I wait?

Sorry I ment VMP 4.0.18

all your applications need to be upgraded so also vmpro

OK, So I need to load ADMIN 4.0.7 and VMPro 4.0.18 at the same time, but what about upgrading my 406v2?

I'm running on 3.2.55 can I got straight to 4.0.7? Has anyone done this?

Thanks, the upgrade went very smooth and apart from a few IP phones having to be rebooted I have not really had any issues.

Manager can only serve 5 tftp clients at a time, that is why it doesnt do them all at the same time.

Guys,

Avaya came out with their own TFTP server. We've been installing it (since it runs as a service) and it can serve several requests at once. Its actually designed for their Multi-Vantage stuff, but works fine on IPO as well (with a couple of tweaks.

ftp://ftp.avaya.com/incoming/Up1cku9/tsoweb/iptel_avaya_tftp.exe

Enjoy...

Kris

good info there kristiandg. i use solarwinds (free) tftp server and it can handle more request then i've ever been able to send to it but one that runs as a service by default and from avaya is probably a better standard way to support customers.
