3550 vs 2950

can anyone tell me any advantages or disadvantages of choosing between a 3550 and a 2950 apart from the price and the fact that the 3550 supports IP routing

No real differences. They both do wirespeed layer2. If you don't need the layer3, then the 2950 is great.
