When I connect to the console port on a 3550-48 switch and press return I get: "%% Low on memory: try again later". Of course later never comes.

If I un-plug it and give it 10 seconds it responds normally and is fine for another couple of months.

When it's out of memory, it refuses any connections via telnet or browser. However, traffic amoung the 48 ports and the two gigabit ports flows normally.

What can be done to fix this. As this switch is my cluster commander, it makes life real unpleasant when I need to access the cluster.

Thank you. bob

My guess is the version of code you are running has a memory leak which cisco is famous for . I would get the latest code and upgrade the box .

As a secondary thought make sure your vty sessions have an exec-timeout on the lines so that any telnet connections are logged off after say 15 minutes of inactivity .
