2nd PC in local network (apparently) breaks Broadband DSL

I installed broadband DSL yesterday.
After a few hiccups got it to work.

When I powered up the other pc in the local network,
the broadband dsl didn't work. I forget the exact
error ( but i will make a note of it when i try again
after posting this item).

I'm posting this in case this is a common problem &
someone knows a simple fix whilst i research the
problem.

I've done a keyword search & the threads I found weren't
immediately relevant ( to me ).

I found it normally necessary to un-'enable'
Kerio Firewall #2.1.5 to get the network to operate

PC1 P6? WinXpPro ( server ), sharing files, printer etc

PC2 P2 Win98 shares files/printer on PC1

Siemens SpeedStream 4200
ethernet/usb ADDL modem

This is connected to a USB socket on the WinXp (PC1 above),
and a line filter to the phone wall socket.

Both PCs on the network have a (i think)"rhine "network card & are connected via an ethernet cable.

The modem (in addition to the USB) socket also has an ethernet socket & maybe this is where the Pc,
dsl connection ? whatever ? is getting confused.

I'll post a few screen prints of dsl connections, network connections in the newsgroup alt.binaries.sheet-music.
Maybe they will assist in prob diagnosis.

Last hardware questions: Are the network cards on the 2 computers directly connected together (no hub or switch between)? If so, are you using a crossover cable?

h/re qns: 2 computers are directly connected.
i think crossover cable is correct term.
Red & ethernet.wotever (i think) and a usb male plug
each end. I remember only two PC's are allowed.

The ( home ) network has been running for 2-3 years
mostly ok. You will see the probs I've had searching
this forum. Again, ta to the techos who'ver kept me
going. My network experience was more novell 2.1.4 sft
ibm token ring etc, very much outdated. [ as an ot observation i did have much fun - work at the time - operating early honeywell mainframe computers Feb 1966 -
programming is Assembly language /binary (octal/hex) - later COBOL. 31 yrs ]

I don't really need to have multiple internet connections.
Not that i need to be politically correct about this.
Probably my ISP thinks so... & in terms of my agreement.
...etc
But anyway, there's only my wife & i at home & she's not into computers. & i only need one toy at a time!<grin>

Occasionally our sons visit - from the other side of Brisbane. The younger has an IT degree, & now he's the
one who usually gets his hands dirty... screwdrivers...
pulling off the cpu heat sink ... oops 'cause i had overheating probs.
He plays with the PC when he's at home & i do my duty &
talk to my wife. - once she actually threatened to move a
bed up to the garage [ where i had my old office ].....

*** p2 portable. ie pentium 2 orig running Win98,
later upgraded to win98 Se2.

Some time ago the mouse stuffed up.
i thought it was the PC, but...

Later I wanted to use 'memory sticks' because the
floppy drive on the xp Pc was a bit flaky.
This so i could work on music / pc apps ? wotever
when i was away caravanning ( R.V.'s for US).
i'd burnt backups to CD to take with me.

It was a pain, dlding /zipping updates from the portable
to floppies, then uploading by the home network
eventually to the Xp Pc.

Asked the local friendly pc supplier/repairer to work on
(1) the mouse prob, (2) memory sticks might avoid floppy
bullshit, like when i upgraded i might need to upgrade every file in a sub-directory structure.

Despite upgrading to win 98 SE2, the supplier could not
get memory sticks to work. They came up with a Ztek
- USB2.0 Network Cable.

I TRIED INSTALLING THIS network cable app, which wanted
another ethernet network, user ids/pwd's etc
[ i don't think it liked the local network which ]
[ i - not really cleverly - had running at the time]
& it screwed up! -this was Nov 2005.
So i gave it away! & went back to floppies.
At least, eventually, they worked!

I'm only mentioning this because it could have
ramifications in the problems i've noted.

prolly too much home brew & getting tired, so i'll leave it
at that.

This is connected to a USB socket on the WinXp (PC1 above),

For most DSL setups you should connect a filter to every phone device... except do not use one on the modem connection.

SpeedStream 4200's are Modem Router combo divices. did you set up the router part or are you useing the pppoe dialer in XP and only useing the 4200 as a modem ? If you access the 4200 at

http://192.168.254.254

sign in admin admin and put the user name and pass word in the ppp setups and save the 4200 is a router if pluged in to a Hub or switch can give access to 200+ computers. Also don't set the build in fire wall to high or you can have trouble geting mail and going to some sites. Once setup as a router if the reset button on the bottom of the 4200 is pushed and held for 5-10 sec. ontil the power led starts blinging the 4200 reverts back to a modem only and you would have to run the setup again to get back to a router.

Coupla typos
1. should be 'ethernet/usb "ADSL" modem'
2. 'Red & ethernet.wotever (i think) and a usb male plug'
should be a telephone male plug - i dunno what you call
it but there are pictures of it on some of the local
networking / cable help sites i found.

Wall plugs [ phone sockets ] are in the room i use as my
office (this is the first connection ) and a 2nd connection
in the lounge room.
Both wall plugs have Line filters. line filters are marked
"line" on one end & "ADSL and PHONE" on the other end. The
"ADSL" is connected to the modem. The modem is connected to
the XP pc by a (supplied) usb cable. The modem end has a special usb socket. There was also an ethernet cable supplied, but i chose to go USB.

allteltec. I am using the pppoe dialer in XP and am only
using the 4200 as a modem.

What would be the advantage(s) of setting it up as a router?

At present i dont have a hub or switch. But I will consider
one ( with the laptop in mind).

As a router you get the NAT fire wall and also the build in fire wall, also you can use it for more then on computer with out having to use Internet sharing and it's problems. Less over head work for you computer to do, computer should run faster. You can set it up as a router and use both the usb port for one computer and the Ethernet jack to go to a 2nd computer. As a router it acts as a DHCP device giving out LAN ip's start at 192.168.254.1 then 192.168.254,2 and so on. I work for a Telco that is and isp and we use the 4200 it is a real good router. I always install as a router.

I tried to access the speedStream 4200

& got a message "Alert
the operation timed out when attempting to contact
192.168.254.254.


In the instructions, it states

http://10.1.1.1/

and brings up the speedStream Router Management
Interface and i do get a menu Login.

however it wont accept admin/admin
- get a message "Form input - Error

this user profile requires a password

i use my own username/password in the Setup | PPP item
under ISP Password...

There are a heap of other options. If you like i could do
a screen print. Some of the options might make my
configuration work but <grin> which ones.


The ethernet cable supplied [by my broadband supplier optusnet ] is too short ( about a metre ) to connect the 2nd pc to the modem?router.

Could i use the ethernet cable currently connecting the
two computers instead? If i can, will all file transfers
[ previously Pc to PC ] be via the net?

I'm thinking at the moment that the local network
settings - maybe set into DUN - are causing my problems
as when i look in network connections local network properties [ & in the optusnet local network properties ]
the time connected appears the only about 4 minutes different. In the local network, the time is bulls...
it should be about 4 mins.

The two pcs have TCP/IP addresses of 192.168.0.1 (win Xp)
and 192.168.0.4 (win98).

The cat 5 cable you have now runing between your computers would be a cross over cable it will not work to connect a pc to the router you need a strate cable. ISP,s sometimes has there own flash put on the modems. I flashed 2 5200 this week and I could not find my flashs so I downloaded one off the net, after flashing the vc came up at 8/81 we use 0/35 you can change the vc programing but ever time you push the reset button it will go back to default 8/81. I found me Alltel ISP flashs and reflashed. So there can be a lot of differt setup options depending on what flash was used to program the modem. Sometime after flashing it will not take a differt flash, saying the modem dose not need upgadeing so if it was the not the write flash you could have to live with it.
