I am looking to replace a Cisco 5000 with a Cisco 2924XL. The main reason for this switch is to get back 5U's of rack space (I pay for space) and the fact that I will only ever use around 20 ports. Currently I am using around 5Mbps but that could max at 10Mbps.
The reason for this question is..... I am not concerned with the backplane capacity because both switches specs are in Gb. I am concered with the speed of the data switching. The primary purpose of the switch is to connect a rack of game servers so the speed of the switch is my biggest concern. Will the 5000 switch the data faster making the overall latency lower than if I used the 2924XL? Or would the latency increase be so minor for such a small amount of bandwidth that it would not matter? Oh course other aspects such as frequent collisions and what not are also a factor. I would not want to sacrifice anything that could cause in game lag....
