I am trying to install Solaris 8 on a 280R server. This is the third server I am setting up and the other two were no problem. This one, however, is giving me a problem.

It is a new server out of the box. I installed an XVR-100 graphics card. I put the installation Disk in the CD-ROM and boot cdrom.

It goes through the sequence of questions for networking and such then asks for the software disk 1. I go through the questions, set up the partitions, and get ready to install the software. As soon as it starts to load the software, it stops and gives me the # prompt.

I have tried two different set of CD-ROMS, switched the two hard drives around, reseeded everything to no availe. It stops at the same place every time.

Has anyone experianced this, or know of any other troubleshooting that I can do?

Thanks

Sounds strange. I do not really think it will help but why not take the cpu's, memory, graphics card etc..from one of the systems that loaded fine and try them in this system and see what happens when installing.

What is the last thing in the console window when it stops.

It asks if you want to proceed with the installation. I press y and then return. The 0% - 100% line comes up then it stops and gives me the # prompt.

I wish I could change out parts, but I have already shipped the previous servers.

So it never actually starts the install 0%-100%?
I assume you have already tried limiting the hardware to one bank of memory and one module?

Do you have other sun parts in house, maybe some are compatable, we could check on it if you have some?

Do you have multiple sets of solaris 9 cd's?
If not do you have solaris 8 cd's you could try loading?

I am loading Sol 8. I have tried two sets of CD's

I just got a loaner from another Dept. I am going to try replacing parts and give it a go.

Thanks

Sorry about that, brain fart on the OS you were using.
Sun has in the past had issues with some of the solaris 8 versions and 280r. The fix was to use a earlier version of solaris 8. supported versions on 280r are

280R
S8 1/01 (Update 3) 750MHz

S8 10/01 (Update 6) 900MHz

S8 2/02 (Update 7) 1.015GHz or 1.2GHz

All S9 versions

I would be surprised if this was a hardware issue!
