Hi all,

I've got a 2600 doing very basic routing from a remote site back to the main via a wireless connection.

At this site one of the interfaces keeps loosing the "IP Helper-address" command that is pointing back to the DHCP at the main site. This is the only command that is going missing though, and of course when it happens none of the devices can renew their addresses when they expire.

The uptime of the router is currently 3 weeks and it has lost it a few times since the last reboot. The command is definately written to the startup-config.

Any ideas?

I don't see anyway the router would loose a command under and interface if it didn't reboot.

Which is why we are stumped too.

We have only been involved with this customer for a month and when we started the configs were a real mess. It was also loading the .bin file from a TFTP server during bootup which I assumed was because the flash wasn't big enough (was loading a 14meg .bin), but now we're thinking the flash isn't too reliable.

I was going to try changing the version unless someone has a better idea?

Your config register is all wrong , the register needs to be changed to 0X2102 this is why you are losing the config over reboots . Notice the config register at the bottom of your show version command , this is not right and i have never even seen a register with that number in it .

If they were booting the image off the network its possible the register could be right , most people don't do that and just boot from flash in which case the register is not correct, should be 0x2102.

hey Viper.. better re-read the original post :p

he says above that it was set to boot from the tftp because the IOS is to big for the flash...

also he says the that the config is dissapearing even though the router has not rebooted or crashed..

the current up time in his post is 3 weeks and hes had to re enter the command numerous times in the past week.

this is a very strange one..

are there no other entries in the log of the router that indicate something is happening?

is your log buffer going back far enough to capture the timeframe that it last occured at?

Actually that configuration register does save the configuration just like 2102, however it sets the console speed to 115200.

Correct brianims, that config register value is just for the console speed. It still holds the config on a reboot.

I made some changes since posting here. It seems the 2600 series routers can only handle the "IP Helper-address" command if it is applied to one interface. We had it on two interfaces to pass certain broadcasts (DHCP one way, TFTP another) which was causing it to loose just that command only from one of the interfaces.

Another round of DHCP leases has gone through since the original post so we'll keep our fingers crossed for a few more days.
