I have a Cisco 2621 router and I'm wondering if any of you know if it is possible to purchase an ADSL WIC for it so that I can use it with an ADSL connection?
Let me know how it goes and the cost as I am thinking of doing the same thing.
Also do you connect the DSL modem into the WIC or are we bypassing the ISP provided modem and if so will it work?
Simple questions I know but thanks for the help.
I was told that ADSL is different than DSL. So it doesn't use a modem. It uses PPoE and connects directly into the WIC, from my understanding. The WIC I need is about $900 CDN.
Just to let other people know, there are serveral kinds of DSL.
SDSL-(Synchronous Digital Subscriber Line)- it acts much like high bandwidth dedicated lines(T1, FR...) in that it transfer/recieves data at the same time. The most expensive kind of DSL.
ADSL-(Asyncronous DSL)- it can only transmit or recieve at one time. This is the usual "DSL" that you hear about all the time on commericials, or that run to your house. Bandiwdth is variable, you pay more for more bandwidth.
IDSL-(ISDN DSL)- Pretty much this sucks... in my opinion. It runs at a top speed of around 144kpbs, but the advantage is that it can be recieved much farther out from a CO. Also, it can only transfer data, no voice, but there is no call setup time like ISDN, so it is an "always-on" connection.
I just though I would clarify because "DSL" really has several different forms. There are ADSL WIC's for the 2600 series, but I'm not sure about SDSL, and since IDSL is fairly new and not widespread, I doubt there is one for it. Let me know if this helps clarify what "DSL" is, somewhat....
I set up a customer exactly like this the other week by connecting the FastEthernet interfaces on the Cisco and Zyxel
cutomer LAN -- Cisco -- Zyxel box -- Internet
You don't need anything fancy on the Cisco, just a route, speak with your provider if you have any problems, they should be able to help.

We install 1720 routers with ADSL WIC's, the same ones used with the 2600 and 3600 series routers. Depending on how your ISP has set up their end (the Broadband Access Server or BRAS/BAS)you shouldn't need an ADSL modem. We connect the ADSL WIC on the router directly to the ADSL port on the POTS splitter via an RJ-11 cable.
If anyone wants the configs then drop me an e-mail.
Chris.

Remember PPPOE authencation. Your IOS needs to support PPPOE. I have my 2621 router with a ADSL card doing also my provider uses pppoe. You can always place a cheaper router (linksys to do the pppoe)in front of the cisco.
