Something strange is happening on my 2523 router. I powered it up and connected via the console port. I am presented with the normal:

Would you like to enter the initial configuration dialog?

I said yes and configured the hostname and passwords etc. I get to the end and select number 2 so I can Save this configuration to nvram and exit.

I then power off the router and when I power it back on my nvram config has gone and I am asked if I want to enter the initial config dialog again.

I have also entered config and changed the hostname as a test and entered copy run start. This too appears to work then after a reboot the same again.

Should I open the router and check it has memory etc? What could be the problem?

Check/try the following:

1. Issue the 'show ver' command and note the config register setting. To boot from NVRAM, it should read as

Configuration register is 0x2102

If it isn't, enter config mode and enter the following command:

config-register 0x2102

2. Check for errors in console mode for possible issues with the NVRAM.

Thanks KiscoKid, the register was set to 0x2142.
