2003 to 2003 R2 upgrade

Is upgrading from 2003 server to R2 similar to installing a Service Pack? I need to upgrade all (6) of my DC's and wondering how much chaos I would create. Also, will ADPREP /forestprep render my Domain unusable?

Well, first, you'll have to purchase and R2 upgrade for each of the servers.......

Then, you'll upgrade your schema using adprep from the SECOND of the two R2 CDs.

I had already installed Windows 2003 R2 or so I thought. I have the right CDs but I was unaware I had to rtun setup2.exe from Disc 2. I thought I was already at R2.
