Ok - So one of the customers I work for got hit by the Rogue Virus defs (that detected a windows file as a virus) that CA put out for EZTrust last Friday and like a lot of people, the Windos 2003 server would not then boot in normal mode. Unfortunately I did not know the cause and have spent the last 2 and a half days getting the server and client machines configured again (as they have no backup for the OS - just do data).
My problem was how to use the existing profiles on the client PCs (all XP)
One method was to use the files and settings tranfer wizard - although this sometimes doesn't pick up settings for "non microsoft" type progs like Firefox etc.
So I opted for the method of connecting to the new domain, logging in with a new profile and then editing the registry to point at the old profile (not forgetting to give the correct permissions through the registry for access to the old profile. This is in theory a good method although there seem to be a few oddities .. even though I followed the same procedure on each machine there were a few differences..
The old profile seemed to load up Ok, although sometimes the email account setting in Outlook express were missing, sometimes all the messages in OE were missing and sometimes the WAB was missing. All these then had to be reimported from the old identity. I couldn't seem to form a pattern of events as to why this occured. Some PC's were 100% OK .....
Anyone offer any clues as to why this occured ...
thanks in advance
