Hi All,

I'm very stuck!

I have one SBS server, (which orignally started life off as a 2000 server, and I installed the SBS on top of) and a second server, which is a 2000 Domain Controller.

The 2000 Domain Controller, holds my Active Directory.

What I would like to do is, make the SBS server, sync up with my domain controller. But it won't, saying it can't find it....

Anybody have any tips or know of any quide lines?

Thanks in advance!

The issue you have is that SBS can not form trusts with other AD domains. That's the tradeoff for getting all the packaged apps for a great price.

See this MS Technet article for some of the info you need - go to the section on Existing Windows Server:

Basically, you'll need to demote your Win2k server to just a workgroup server first, then you can join it the SBS domain, and then promote it back to a member server so that can help server in AD tasks.

With SBS though, your SBS server will have to be the FSMO master for the domain. No way around it.

Thanks for the reply!

It hurt to read, but makes sense. I'm a little worried about demoting my live 2000 server, then prompoting it back.

Still, the link you sent me does clearly explain the situation!

thanks again

I would be worried too...just make sure you've got several good backups before you tackle it.

lol.

I'm actually considering, keeping the SBS Server, independant and purely for Email access only. I know it defeats the object of having active directory then, as Ill have two independant active directories.

But my main live 2000 domain server, is working really well!... and if it ain't broke.... bla bla.. you know what I'm saying.

Hmmmm have to think about this.

Wow, thanks!! I couldn't of asked for a better response!

Thanks to you both.

Ahhh Yes, The Name The AD Domain The Same As My Internet Domain Adventure.

Definitely, for SBS use the .local or .internal extension. There are really few exceptions for anyone to use their Internet Domain for AD, and they know who they are. I think MS does a reasonable job explaining this in their SBS Install Guide, if people read that.

The other great tip for SBS, is get a second NIC to use for the external WAN connection and put nothing else on that segment except a router and a hardware firewall if desired. This simplifies ISA maintenance so much its not funny.
