2000 freezes on start-up screen.

I recently reformated a drive in my aunts HP Pavilion 6740c. Then I installed Windows 2000 pro. Ive tried installing FAT, and NTFS. Each time, when I restarted after install the bar gets to 100% then freezes. I never reach the desktop. but its so close. You can here the system run, it thinks awhile, then just freezes.

i did already. it will boot in safe mode. but i cant do much in safe mode. it wont let me to the device manager. i heard something about doing a boot log, but then when i do a boot lod, then shut down after the freeze ten startup again in safe the log will go to the safe mode log because it will re-record. I dont know what to do yet. any suggestions?

I strongly suspect a BIOS update is required.

Look in Event Viewer to see if any drivers or services are failing to run or are crashing.

i cant find a BIOS updates, can someone guide me, and of course bcastner, im sure your right (as always from the looks of the boards )

OK im using a HP Pavilion (not mine) heh 6740c. It has PhoenixBios 4.0, version 1.12 coreversion 4.06, bios revision 1.12, dated clear back to 4/19/00. lol. any help?

Also note that the support site mentioned that this PC may not meet requirements for XP and drivers may not be available for some items, so since 2000 and XP are very similar, you may have problems loading 2000 on this machine since it was deisgned for Win95/98, the minimum hadrware req's for 2000 might not be met by this pc.
