When the users came in today they were able to login but once they tried accessing any shared folders they received an error saying something about security settings and to check the server.

I tried restarting the server and now it is stuck on Preparing network settings

Try Last Know Good What happens then. Or boot into safe mode and start looking at the event logs and see if there is any pointer to what is going on there

its resolved, I have just started breathing again

AD was corrupted so I had to restart in Directory services mode and restore from yesterdays system state.

I also noticed that there was only 30mb free on the c: drive which is what i think corrupted it so I had to free some space first.

you need to maintain at least 750MB of free space on your DC....

recommended is 2GB free space at any given time...this is a must...anything under 512-600MB (depending on SP, hotfixes, etc.) and you will fail to replicate FRS data

almost got a paragraph there :)

when you say maintain at least 750mb of free space on the DC do you mean the root drive (C:) or the whole system?

the system drive typically....if you begin spanning items such as the AD database, FRS staging, etc., then you will need to maintain a comparable amount of disk space on those drives as well.

by default though, FRS staging hits the system drive...

The last time I read about a DC freezing on "Preparing Network Connections" was in faq96-4907, step 11.
