Hello. I have three computers, two xp home boxes and one win 98 (not se) box. One of the xp boxes has been networked and files and printers have been shared with the 98 box. Now, a new guy comes into town and destroys everything... by that i mean that the other xp box, as soon as it was connected made the win98 invisble for the first xp box, while the second xp box is visible for the first xp box. AND the new xp box can't see anyone at all.
As you see it is a huge mess...
Can anyone please give me a guide on how to proceed for achieving a optimal configuration? Its ok, I can start from scratch (in tcp/ip config and that, not in reinstalling windows).

any help greatly appreciated. Ah by the way internet is not shared via ICS, there is an ADSL router and each box has a wan miniport connection that works perfectly.

thanks!

This should be really simply.

1. Assign static ip addresses, gateways, and dns entries for all 3 machines. Make sure they can browse the web.

2. When that's done, make sure the option "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" is selected, for the 2 XP machines, its in properties of TCP/IP.
Go to Advanced, WINS tab.

3. Reboot the machines.

3. If this didn't completely clear it up for the 98 machine, create a lmhosts file on the 98 machine. This is not difficult. Run a command prompt. CD into the c:\windows directory. Type edit lmhosts

This will launch the file editor, the file should have 3 entries, 1 for each computer name and ip address.

Example
192.168.0.1 xpcomputer1
192.168.0.2 xpcomputer2
192.168.0.3 windows98box

Save the file and reboot.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

You should not need to use LMHOSTS in this circumstance. thread779-877806

hi thanks for your replies but I had no luck. Did exactly as told and nothing, i can't get the three pcs see each other...
furthermore, one xp machine can't see the other one or ping it (no there are no hw issues since I had ping between them before). And with the win 98 machine, there is a one way ping between one xp machine, thw 98 box cannot ping anyone...

help please!

thanks

A ping failure is either hardware, or a software firewall issue.

Beware of "hidden" firewalls often installed with antivirus software. PC-Illan, for one, is famous for this.

Note too that 'disabling' a firewall is often not enough. You have to either configure it properly for your LAN subnet, or remove it completely. The Symantec Norton Internet Utility suite comes to mind, but McAfee and others are just as bad. See their web sites for manual removal instructions.

thanks a lot to all of you, effectively there was a misconfigured firewall... so i configured it and voila tout va bien!

thanks!
