Hello

I have spent the past few days trying to figure this one out, hopefully someone here can help me:

I have a Cisco 1801 router. I have connected it via ADSL to the ISP Brightview. I have run through the setup process and entered all the information that it has asked for. The router connects to the Internet and establishes a PPP connection. Then I have problems.

No computer can connect to the Internet. I have disabled access lists, added additional rules to allow traffic through. Interestingly though if I run a lookup using Hyperterminal, the query returns an IP address of the webserver it needs to connect to but then fails to connect to it.

Below is a copy of my config, I have edited the bits that should be passwords/keys for obvious reasons:

!This is the running config of the router: 192.168.1.1

Can you ping an IP address on the internet and not a named site?

Yes. I can also access certain websites using just their IP. I have used a different router with the same provider before (US Robotics 019106) and this has worked fine with the same settings as the cisco

Thanks for the reply
Steve

You have the following for DHCP

ip dhcp pool sdm-pool1
import all
network 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0
dns-server 192.168.1.1 <------------remove
default-router 192.168.1.1

Set the DNS server in the DHCP statement to
80.189.92.2

Reboot a PC and see what happens. Please post results....

Thanks for the post, apologies for not replying sooner (work issues).
I tried what you suggested and thought it hadnt worked until I tried a computer that hadnt been on the Internet before and it worked first time! Not sure why but the computer I was testing on was locking the DNS addresses and not using the new ones.

At last I can ditch the old router!!

Thanks again for your post
