I've a lab setup with a microsoft and a linux server on VLAN 1 and a novell server on VLAN 2 (catalyst 2900 switch), routing done between two 1603R routers and a DCE/DTE crossover. I now want to try changing VLAN2 to pure IPX but no router commands seem to be available for configuring IPX. What am I doing wrong (or rather not doing)

Sounds like the IOS you have has no IPX support, what is the IOS in use on the 1603 (sh ver or sh flash)

One router is using 12.1(7), the other uses 11.2(18)

It isn't the version in terms of numbers that's important. The lower-end platforms such as 1600s usually require an "IP Plus" or "Enterprise" IOS for support beyond the most basic IP stuff.

If you have a CCO login, you can use the feature navigator.

I keep forgetting that the Feature Navigator is being phased out in favor of the Software Advisor. I still think you need a login to use it. But for that matter, you need a login to download code, so the SA or FN wouldn't be of any use to you anyway if you didn't have one.

I thought that this may be the case, i.e. the bog standard 1600 series doesn't have IPX support (I've seen IPX software feature packs for sale at around £100). At least I'm not doing something wrong, I'll just have to learn the IPX stuff parrot fashion. I've only had to use IPX a couple of times in anger in the real world anyway, thanks for all your help.
