I have two 1140e handsets reporting 'cable unplugged'. I have patched them to known good switch ports with no change. Is there a way to clear the error eg: default the handset, or does this mean the network port has died and the handset is irretreiveable.

I've this happen before and this is how I resolved it. Take the PC of 1140 your having the problem with, plug the PC directly into the network(not the phone), login to windows, do an IPconfig /release and shutdown the computer. Unplug the cable, connect it back to your 1140 and see if it comes up.

We have had that issue here too with port security enabled. The network team had to remove power from network port and re-enable. I have also seen the ipconfig release/renew work. One issue we see with port security is that some phones are registering the same MAC address on both the PC and phone VLANs so the PC itself violates port security of 2 as a 3rd address is needed for the PC to register properly.
Good luck.
