Hi,

I have a machine here that becomes very slow and unstable when attempting to patch it to SP4 level. I can get as far as it "checking system settings" but it does nothing and will sit there for over an hour like it. I am getting "update.exe" taking 100% of the system CPU and I have to crash out of it to get out and reeboot the machine. IS there any way round this bar a fresh install?

Cheers

I have come across this problem on a machine, even after doing a fresh install the problems came back. I could use a slipstreamed setup disk with sp4 but when I tried to apply hot fixes the problem came back.

We eventually after A LOT of digging around testing etc found the culprit to the problem a faulty motherboard.

We got a replacement board from IBM and the machine has been working fine ever since with all the other hardware exactly the same.

Thats the only time I seen this problem happen...but your problem could be diffrent.

One way to test this would be if you have another machine with the same spec to take the hard drive out of the machine it doesn't work in and try and install sp4 on the other machine. If it works you know for sure that your hard drive is ok and that your windows install is working ok.

Then if you run a memtest on the machine with the problem and it passes you have ruled out another part. for a good memtester.

If your mobo is under warranty you could try and get it replaced as you have just about covered every other possible part of your machine as working ok.

Hi mate,

Thanks for your suggestions. I have tried a few different sources of the SP4 update.exe file and I get the same with each (I couldn't find much help anywhere but that was one solution) although they all worked fine on a different PC. I think the PC may still be under warranty so things could be replaced, but we are waiting to hear. It is likely that the hard disk is at fault as a current format has taken place and it is taking a VERY long time and has not finished as yet! :(

Will let you know the outcome
