That seems to be the concensus here. A lot of people are defragging and with all the disk activity on a server, it just makes sense to do regular defrags on the server. Even on desktop computers, Windows creates and deletes a lot of temp files. Like you said, it won't hurt doing a regular defrag.
I don't know what they're talking about. I am a network administrator and manage multiple servers and have never heard of that problem. Defragging a workstation has nothing to do with the server. I just downloaded a defrag program and configured it to run in the background. I'll find out...

You mention that you only get as far as img, there might be an 8 sub folder limit. Just like DOS naming can only take 8 characters.

You can also try uninstalling your network card from Device Manager. Restart your computer and Windows should automatically install the network card and whatever driver it needs.

A lot of the viruses install executable files to Windows and windows\system32. It could have been a virus or a spyware on the system32 folder that Norton wanted to delete.
Download Microsoft's AntiSpyware and run it a few times. Perform disk cleanup and disk defrag on your hard drive too.
